The PLA is holding their first election for a new Chair this month. Every two years, one of the chairs will be rotated (after a four year term). Any committee member who has attended an event in the last year may nominate themselves – this year, nominees must take a photo of themselves doing something specifically playful to demonstrate their suitability (e.g. taking a balloon on an adventure, hunting for otters). These will be put to a vote on this website, resulting in an announcement at the November PLA meeting. Send your photos by Monday October 14th to the 2018/19 chairs Alex Moseley and Nic Whitton.

More: Full details and a list of tasks Committee members and Chairs are expected to undertake.

Until November, that’s all folks – remember to use #PlayLearn on Twitter to share your news and stay in touch.

Jennifer Smith, Instructional Design Officer, Durham University Business School

I was introduced to playful learning by Nic Whitton and went to my first conference in July 2019 and I haven’t looked back! Learning to give yourself and others permission to play in a safe environment is key. It is not all silliness but there is a time and place for silly, you just have to know when.

My first experience with designing something ‘fun’ or a game would be when I worked with Professor Christos Tsinopoulos to design and develop an adaptation of the famous MIT Beer Game for our online MBA Module Operations and Technology. This allows the students to understand and coordinate a supply chain but doing it online via email and discussion forums. It has a bit of role-playing and student collaboration with a hint of competition as the group with the least amount of inventory at the end – wins.

Here is a quick video we used as a debrief of a past student’s thoughts on the game:

I am currently taking the Introduction to digital game-based learning module at The University of Edinburgh and hoping to explore how we can build playful learning in an asynchronous environment. How can we bring together a cohort to play and learn to give them a better experience in creating social presence – I hope I can answer this in the future.

I started off working in the entertainment computer games industry, but realised quite quickly that I wanted to create games which could create purposeful impact In health education , so moved over into academia. I’m also an er *cough cough* ex-WOW player, which should tell you all you need to know.
Screenshot of computer game introduction screen for sexual health game.
The first real game I developed when I got into academia was a sexual health game called PRE:PARe. It was bad. Very bad. But I learnt a lot from this first project about differences and complexities of game dev. It was my most successful failure.
Photo of a Dungeons and Dragons board with fallen pieces and a many sided dice.
One of the most useful things that I have learnt, is to experience lots of different types of games. I used to be very much in the mindset that it was computer games all the way for me. Now, thanks to persistent friends, I love to play D&D, MTG and board games which I try to use as inspiration. I have yet to fully succumb to LARP but it’s next on the list.
Photo of a map with string lines across it next to a pair of scissors and ball of string.
I am also a sucker for anything mystery or curiosity related. Most of my recent research has been around how people react to curiosity in education. Truth be told I can’t resist a box… maybe I was a cat in a past life.
Photo of a colourful toy octopus on a desk with people and paperwork behind.
I feel grateful to the playful learning community as there is always someone there to inspire, advise or help when it is needed. Even in these uncertain times when everything is arse backwards, its comforting to know there is a little community spilling out awesomeness into the world.

Thanks for sharing your story and your photos Sam.

Club Penguin Party
I honed my playmaking skills by subjecting my children to elaborate themed parties. This photo shows a puffle-catching game at a Club Penguin party.
Medical Monopoly
Medical Monopoly was one of the first games I designed for students, and it is still my favourite. It’s a heady mix of strategy, puzzle solving and creative challenges played out across museums and galleries in London.
Playful Learning Special Interest Group
One of the best things I’ve ever done is to join the Playful Learning Special Interest Group, now the Playful Learning Association. In this photo are so many of the amazing, inspiring people that have enriched my life. We are gathered here to work on the Playful Learning book.
Pirate conference game
The Playful Learning conference is an amazing annual event. In 2018 I was charged with designing a pirate-themed conference-dinner game that had silly things to do between each course and ended in an epic sea battle. Miraculously, no one was injured in the playing of this game.
I love designing portable escape rooms. ‘Breaking Bag’ – on which I work with a small, talented team of current and former students – is a science-themed escape game in a backpack. We run it at the Great Exhibition Road Festival, in schools and for staff away-days.

Thanks for sharing your story and your photos Giskin.

If you are unlucky, you might be selected as next month’s sacrifice chosen member – we will be in touch!

Why Playful Learning?

You know playful learning works, but struggling to find the words to explain the approach to colleagues? Here’s a starter to 10 to help you – let us know what you think in the comments.

Music score labelled 'Playful Kittens'
  • Safe Failure Play enables the creation of safe learning communities and activities in which learners can take risks, fail, learn from that failure, and build resilience.
  • Explore Possibilities Play supports creativity by enabling learners to inhabit other spaces, use their imaginations and explore new possibilities, identities and ways of being in the world.
  • Collaborative Ideas Play breaks down barriers, it gets learners to collaborate and work together and this helps productivity and creativity.
  • Empowerment Play gives learners agency to test, and decide, on their own direction and approach to learning.
  • Memorable Learning Playful approaches can make content more ‘sticky’ and easier to remember. This leads to an improved student experience by enacting innovative and active pedagogies.

2020/2021 Diary

As well as a monthly round-up, this diary will hold a list of Playful Learning Association events for the coming year (Sept 2020 – August 2021).
